DNCC removes 1.25 lakh banners, festoons in one month
DHAKA, Nov 6, 2025 (BSS) - The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has removed a total of 1.25 lakh illegal banners and festoons across the city in the past one month. DNCC Administrator Mohammad Azaz disclosed the information today after attending a divisional review meeting on the "Banner and Festoons Removal Programme" held at Nagar Bhaban here. "We have removed around 1.25 lakh banners and festoons over the past month. I urge everyone not to deface the city with banners and festoons anymore. It is a very laborious task for our city workers," the DNCC administrator said. During the meeting, detailed statistics of the removal activities conducted in 52 wards under DNCC's 10 regional offices were presented. According to the report, Region-3 saw the highest removal with 29,441 banners and festoons cleared, followed by around 25,000 from Region-2, 18,000 from Region-4, 12,000 from Region-5 and about 11,000 from Region-9. Last month, DNCC designated around 30 spots across the city where posters can be put up free of cost.  Following that, the corporation launched a coordinated drive to remove all illegally installed banners, posters and festoons. The month-long campaign was carried out across all 52 wards under DNCC's 10 regional offices. DNCC authorities said the city cleanliness drive will continue to keep Dhaka neat and orderly.

Drugmaker AstraZeneca profit jumps as zones in on US
LONDON, Nov 6, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca announced surging quarterly profit Thursday on strong sales of cancer drugs and as the group zones in on the United States, pressured by President Donald Trump. Net profit jumped 77 percent to $2.53 billion in the third quarter compared with the July-September period one year earlier, AstraZeneca said in a statement. "We are... delivering on our strategy to strengthen our operations in the United States to power our growth," said chief executive Pascal Soriot. "This includes a historic agreement with the US government to lower the cost of medicines for American patients, and broadening our US manufacturing footprint." Trump last month announced a deal with AstraZeneca for significantly lower drug prices in the United States. In exchange, the Trump administration agreed to a three-year delay on new tariffs. Meanwhile in July, AstraZeneca announced plans to invest $50 billion by 2030 on boosting its US manufacturing and research operations. And at the end of September, it said it planned to list its shares directly on the New York Stock Exchange to attract more investors. Britain's largest drugmaker will remain headquartered in the UK and keep its primary listing on London's top-tier FTSE 100 index. However, the move highlights the increasing importance of the US market to AstraZeneca, which Thursday added that group revenue grew 12 percent to $15.2 billion in the third quarter, driven by oncology drugs.

Afghanistan opium cultivation falls 20 percent in 2025: UN report
Afghanistan opium cultivation falls 20 percent in 2025: UN report
KABUL, Nov 6, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - Opium cultivation in Afghanistan dropped by 20 percent in 2025, the United Nations said on Thursday, while warning of a simultaneous surge in synthetic drug production and trafficking. The Taliban authorities banned opium poppy cultivation nationwide in 2022, the year after they returned to power in Kabul. The area dedicated to poppy farming fell from 12,800 hectares (around 31,600 acres) in 2024 to 10,200 hectares in 2025, a new report released by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said. Opium cultivation in 2022 covered around 232,000 hectares, according to the UNODC. Output of opium, the core ingredient in heroin, was estimated at 296 tons in 2025, a 32 percent drop compared to the previous year. Farmers' income from opium sales fell by nearly half, from $260 million in 2024 to $134 million this year. Prices of dry opium remain five times higher than the pre-ban average despite a decline in 2025, the UNODC said. The agency also warned of a sharp rise in synthetic drug activity, particularly methamphetamine. "Synthetic drugs appear to have become the new business model for organised crime groups due to the relative ease of production, the greater difficulty in detection and relative resilience to climate changes," it said. The UN has repeatedly called on the international community to help Afghan farmers transition away from opium to other crops and livelihoods, a request also made by the Taliban government. "After the ban, many farmers shifted to growing cereals and other crops. Worsening weather conditions, such as droughts or low rainfall, however, resulted in over 40 percent of farmland laying barren," the agency said. The 2022 ban caused a shift in cultivation areas to Afghanistan's northeast, away from Taliban strongholds in the south where it was previously cultivated. Several people were killed in clashes in May 2024 between farmers and law enforcement forces sent to destroy poppy fields in the northeastern region of Badakhshan, which has resisted the opium ban.
