DHAKA, June 27, 2026 (BSS) - BanglaFact, the fact-checking and media research team of the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB), has identified an attempt to mislead the public by falsely portraying a video from India's Gujarat state as an incident that took place in Bangladesh.
According to BanglaFact, a video recently went viral on Facebook with the claim that it showed a Jubo Dal leader from Cox's Bazar abducting a woman in broad daylight.
However, after verification, BanglaFact found that the video has no connection with Bangladesh.
The fact-checking team said the footage actually depicts an incident in Vadgam village in the Indian state of Gujarat, where a 19-year-old woman was allegedly taken away from her live-in partner's residence by her father and three other individuals on June 22.
BanglaFact said the claim linking the video to Bangladesh and identifying the alleged abductor as a Jubo Dal leader is false and unsupported by evidence.
The organisation noted that fact-checking groups have observed an increase in misinformation related to Bangladesh through various social media accounts and Facebook pages operated both at home and abroad following the July 2024 Mass Uprising.
It also said recent fact-checking efforts have identified repeated attempts to spread rumours and false information surrounding various national issues, including misleading content targeting BNP and the newly elected BNP-led government.
