MANIKGANJ, Aug 24, 2026 (BSS) - Harvesting of sesame, the oily seeds, is going to end in all the seven upazilas in the district during the current season, the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said today.

The Department of Agriculture Extension sources said they set a target of sesame cultivation on 4,150 hectares of land with a production target 4112 metric tons in the seven upazilas of the district. But sesame was cultivated in 4,185 hectares of land, exceeding its fixed target.

The Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Md Shahjahan Siraj said good production and fair prices are encouraging cultivators to cultivate more land with sesame in the district.

Adding that the vast char areas of Daulatpur, Shibalaya and Harirampur upazilas in the district are being under sesame cultivation that remained uncultivated or barren for a long time are now being brought under sesame cultivation due to high profitability, fair market prices, and low production costs. 

DAE sources said more than 80 percent of sesame has already been harvested.
