CHATTOGRAM, Aug 28, 2026 (BSS) - Chattogram District Council Administrator Mahbuber Rahman Shamim has said the council will extend support, within its capacity, to promote sports, debate and educational activities among students.

He noted that sports practice among students has declined significantly in recent years and stressed the need to revive the culture.

"Those who organise debate competitions, sports events and educational activities can approach me for support. As long as I serve in the district council, I will remain accessible to students and teachers," he said.

Shamim made the remarks as the chief guest at the opening of the 3rd NGHSDS National Asian Parliamentary Debate Competition-2026 at the hall of Nasirabad Government High School this morning.

He urged students to develop the habit of expressing their views through logical and reasoned arguments, saying debates should allow participants to present arguments and counterarguments without resorting to intolerance or violence.

"The identity of who supports or opposes a position is secondary. What matters is the ability to present one's viewpoint with sound reasoning," he said.

The inaugural session was chaired by senior teacher Biplob Das. Muhammad Saiful Alam, convener of Chattogram Metropolitan Chhatra Dal, attended as a special guest.

Among others, Sareng Bangladesh founder Minhajul Islam, Chattogram South District Chhatra Dal Member Secretary Kamruddin Sabuj, Drishti Chattogram member Abu Junayed Asad, Equity Officer Israt Jahan Shampa and former Chattogram Medical College Debate Club president Dr Mehjabin Mahi attended the event.
