City's cattle markets abuzz with buyers, sellers
City's cattle markets abuzz with buyers, sellers
DHAKA, May 25, 2026 (BSS) - Cattle markets across the capital have turned vibrant ahead of the holy Eid-ul-Azha, with the number of buyers and sellers increasing as the Eid holidays begin. A festive atmosphere now prevails at sacrificial animal markets across the city, where the sounds of cattle, bargaining, and heavy crowds continue from morning until late at night. A total of 27 cattle markets have been set up under the two city corporations in the city this year. Of those, 11 are operating under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and 16 under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).  Among those, the Gabtoli cattle market, one of the largest and most well-known in the capital, has emerged as a major centre of attraction. Since early Monday, cattle markets across the capital have witnessed intense activity. Trucks loaded with cows, goats and buffaloes from different districts are arriving at the markets.  Farmers from Kushtia, Pabna, Sirajganj, Natore, Cumilla, Naogaon and Rajbari have brought their livestock to the capital in hopes of securing good prices. Visits to different markets showed that medium-sized local cows are in the highest demand. A large segment of middle-income and lower middle-income buyers are seeking quality animals within their budgets. Many are visiting markets with family members to inspect animals, negotiate prices and purchase preferred livestock, while others are coming simply to experience the atmosphere. According to buyers, animals are available at relatively affordable prices after several rounds of bargaining, although prices of large-sized cattle remain high.  Sellers, however, said a wide range of livestock at varying prices is available this year due to increased supply from farmers. They expect the highest volume of sales during the final two days before Eid. Raisul, a farmer visiting Shahjahanpur market, told BSS, "Feed and transportation costs have increased. So we have to ask for somewhat higher prices. However, buyers' affordability is also being taken into consideration." Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies are actively working to maintain order at the markets and prevent the circulation of counterfeit currency.  Police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and members of other security agencies have been deployed at every major market in the capital.  In addition, various banks have set up counterfeit currency detection booths and cash counting machines. Many banks are also offering account-opening facilities for livestock traders within just five minutes. State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, while visiting cattle markets, said there would be no shortage of sacrificial animals in the country this year. Domestic livestock production would be sufficient to meet demand, he added.  He also said Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police had been instructed to maintain strict surveillance to prevent illegal entry of livestock through border areas. According to the Department of Livestock Services, the total number of sacrificial livestock in the country this year stands at 12,333,840, while projected demand has been estimated at 10,106,334. Accordingly, more than 2.2 million animals are expected to remain surplus beyond demand. Temporary cattle markets under DSCC have been set up in Postogola, Shahjahanpur, Rahmatganj, Amulia, Shyampur, Aftabnagar, Kajla-Matuail area, Dayaganj-Jurain, Banasree, Golapbag and other locations.  On the other hand, temporary cattle markets under DNCC have been established in Mirpur, Kalshi, Boshila, Uttara Diabari, Bhatara, Badda, Mohakhali and areas adjacent to Bashundhara. The cattle markets in the capital now reflect a distinct Eid atmosphere. Bargaining by buyers, calls from sellers and preparations for sacrifice have added festive spirit to urban life.  As Eid draws closer, the vibrancy of markets and pace of trading continue to increase.

With ice cream and giant fans, hajj pilgrims battle searing heat
With ice cream and giant fans, hajj pilgrims battle searing heat
MAKKAH, Saudi Arabia, May 25, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - To avoid the punishing sun, Inas Gamal abandoned her ambitious plan of spending the days ahead of the hajj praying in Makkah's Grand Mosque and retreated to the comfort of an air-conditioned hotel room to perform her daytime prayers. Despite travelling all the way from Egypt for the annual pilgrimage, Gamal said it was just too hot to spend much time outside during the day, where temperatures crossed 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). "It's very hot, much hotter than I imagined," the mother of four, who is performing the hajj for the first time, told AFP. "I can't adapt," she added while adjusting her sunglasses to protect her eyes from the harsh glare of the sun. "I had planned to perform all my prayers at the Grand Mosque, but I couldn't go down for the prayers held during the day." Pilgrims perform most of the hajj's rites outdoors where more than a million devotees gather in stifling conditions, with many attendees succumbing to heatstroke, fainting spells and even cardiac arrest triggered by the heat. Saudi Arabia's National Center for Meteorology predicted daytime temperatures this week would hover between 42 and 47 degrees Celsius in Makkah during the hajj, which officially begins on Monday. For pilgrims travelling from outside the region, the harsh desert climate can be brutal. "I make sure to drink large amounts of water and beverages rich in salts and minerals, because we sweat constantly and are always on the move," said Imad Ahmed, visiting from Britain. - 'Really hot' - To protect worshippers from the extreme heat, authorities rely on one of the most powerful air conditioning systems in the world to cool the Grand Mosque's courtyards, according to Saudi state television. Other areas have huge fans, mist sprayers and cooled flooring systems to mitigate the searing heat. Trucks are also continuously distributing free bottles of ice-cold water to pilgrims. But even with these measures, the unrelenting sun continues to bake the white marble surrounding the grounds of the Grand Mosque where most pilgrims have congregated in recent days. "It's really hot," said Mohamed Nabil, who hails from the Algerian coastal city of Oran, where temperatures are currently around 25 degrees Celsius. The 43-year-old professor said he regularly pours water on his face to stay cool, while racking up 30,000 steps a day as he explores Makkah. - Heatstrokes - Ice cream stands are often mobbed by pilgrims, while others seek shelter in the shade of buildings near the mosque or in indoor galleries, where they lie on carpets beneath enormous fans while waiting to perform their prayers. When the hajj begins, pilgrims will be forced to beat the heat for many of the rites, including the pilgrimage's climax at Mount Arafat on Tuesday where there is little if any shade to be found on the rocky hill. More than 50,000 healthcare staff and 3,000 ambulances are on hand to help pilgrims in need, the Saudi health ministry said. On Saturday, the ministry said its medical teams had already treated 144 people suffering from heatstroke. In 2024, more than 1,300 pilgrims died as temperatures crossed 50 degrees Celsius, according to authorities. Speaking from a hospital room in the Mina camp, where authorities treat pilgrims for heat exhaustion, the health ministry's Jameel Abualenain said he was mainly concerned "about rising temperatures" affecting pilgrims. To protect against heatstroke, he said people must "drink enough water, use umbrellas and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun".

Bangladesh to host inaugural trade-investment conference in June
DHAKA, May 25, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh is set to host its first Trade and Investment Conference 2026 next month, aiming to strengthen economic resilience and attract greater foreign investment ahead of the country's graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Sunday presided over a high-level preparatory meeting for the conference, scheduled to be held on June 13 at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka, said a foreign ministry's press release here today.   The conference is being jointly organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) under the theme "Navigating Risks - Unlocking Resilience". The daylong event will bring together senior government ministers and advisers, heads of mission accredited to Dhaka, representatives of multilateral development institutions, business leaders and private sector stakeholders. The conference will feature plenary discussions and roundtable sessions on trade and investment policy, financing and capital mobilisation, market access, industrial competitiveness, artificial intelligence, creative industries and sports. The foreign ministry said that the initiative comes at a critical time as Bangladesh prepares to graduate from LDC status in November 2026 while advancing negotiations on several bilateral trade and investment agreements. The conference is also expected to focus on enhancing foreign direct investment and strengthening the country's economic resilience amid evolving global economic challenges. Around 350 delegates are expected to participate in the event.
