Blood of July uprising martyrs should not go in vain: DU VC

DHAKA, July 30, 2026 (BSS)- Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A B M Obaidul Islam has rich tributes to the martyrs of the July mass uprising, saying that the supreme sacrifices made by them should not go in vain. 

He called upon all to work together to build a discrimination-free Bangladesh in line with the aspirations of the July movement.

The VC made the remarks as the chief guest at a discussion and prize distribution ceremony titled "In Memory of July '24 Mass Uprising" at Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall yesterday, a DU press release said today.

 Hall Provost Professor Dr. Md. Elias Al-Mamun presided over the function while University Grants Commission (UGC) Member Professor Dr. Md. Aslam Hossain and Dean of the DU Science Faculty Professor Dr. Md. Mofazzal Hossain spoke as special guests.

Highlighting the misrule of the ousted Awami League regime, Prof. Obaidul Islam said that when rulers transform from public servants into oppressors, their downfall becomes inevitable. History proves that no force can survive forever by ignoring public aspirations, he said.

He noted that various initiatives have been undertaken to preserve the memory of the July revolution, including the establishment of a July Monument and July Corner, tuition fee waivers for injured students, and the publication of commemorative volumes.

At the function, prizes were awarded to the winners of an essay competition titled "July Mass Uprising in the Advancement of Democracy". 

The awardees are Md. Sifat Ali (Pharmacy), Fahim Shahriar (Zoology), and Md. Mohsin Uddin Shafi (Mathematics).

Marking July mass uprising various events were held at the Department of Zoology, Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty, Kabi Jasimuddin Hall, Masterda Surja Sen Hall, Department of Sanskrit, Department of English, and Department of Political Science.

DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Abdus Salam, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Admin) Professor Dr. Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane, Treasurer Professor Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury attended the programmes as guests.
