Tamim wants proper planning before staging next BPL

DHAKA, July 30, 2026 (BSS) — Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Tamim Iqbal has ruled out rushing into the next edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), stating that the tournament will only be held if it can be organized to the required standard.

With uncertainty still surrounding the country's premier franchise competition, the BCB has yet to make an official announcement regarding the next edition.

After a board of directors meeting yesterday night, Tamim said the board would emphasize on quality regarding the BPL.

"We will not hold the BPL just for the sake of holding it. I don't think we have enough time," Tamim said.

"If we organize the BPL in the future, we will do it properly. We will organize it the way it should be," he said.

Tamim also spoke about his new role in international cricket administration after being appointed chairman of the ICC's Franchise Cricket Oversight Committee during the recent ICC Board meetings.

He said he attended the informal meeting on July 9 before taking part in the formal sessions on July 11 and 12, where he was warmly received by fellow board members.

"The ICC meeting went well. I joined the first informal meeting on July 9. I attended the formal meetings for two days on July 11 and 12. They welcomed me. I delivered my speech and spoke whenever it was necessary," he said.

Citing the appointment a proud moment for both himself and Bangladesh, Tamim said the committee would oversee the growth and governance of franchise leagues around the world.

"It is a matter of great pride for me and for the country. I was made chairman of a committee on the very first day," he said.

"Franchise leagues are being launched in different countries around the world. Our responsibility is to see whether the proper processes are being followed and whether things that should not be happening are taking place in those leagues.”

He said that his committee has also assigned several other responsibilities apart from the franchise leagues.

“The committee has also been assigned several other responsibilities related to international cricket. We will discuss those issues and take the appropriate steps."
