DHAKA, July 30, 2026 (BSS) – A court here today sentenced two people to life imprisonment in a case filed over the murder of wholesale vegetable trader Md Chunnu Miah in the capital's Shyambazar area under Gendaria Police Station.

The two convicts are Md Mamun and Babu alias Bagha Babu. The court also dropped the name of another accused, Sajib, from the proceedings as he had died of natural causes.

Judge Mahmudul Islam of the Dhaka 9th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court pronounced the verdict. The court also fined the two convicts Taka 10,000 each, with an additional six months' rigorous imprisonment in default of payment, Public Prosecutor Aminul Islam Sarkar told BSS.

According to the prosecution, Chunnu was returning to Shyambazar from the Jatrabari wholesale kitchen market after purchasing a sack of brinjals at around 5:00 am on February 15, 2011. When he reached the Katherpul area, the three accused intercepted him. After Chunnu said he recognised them, Sajib stabbed him before the trio fled the scene.

Police rushed Chunnu to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Chunnu Miah's brother-in-law filed the case with Gendaria Police Station on February 16, 2011. Police submitted the charge sheet against Md Mamun, Babu and Sajib on June 14, 2011. The court framed charges against the accused on August 7, 2011.

Twelve of the 19 prosecution witnesses testified during the trial.
