RAJSHAHI, July 30, 2026 (BSS) - Two days after a boat capsized in the Padma River in Rajshahi, the bodies of father Kawsar Ali, 60, and son Ziarul Islam, 30, surfaced in water.

Fire Service personnel recovered the two bodies this afternoon and handed them over to the family. The bodies were later buried.

Earlier, last Tuesday afternoon, Kawsar Ali's shallow engine-driven boat sank in the Padma near the Barakuthi area of Rajshahi city.

He was returning home after cutting casuarina trees from the char (river island). There were six other passengers on the boat, including Kawsar Ali's wife Zahera Begum.

After the boat sank, they tried to swim ashore. Another boat came and rescued them.

All of them live in the Shyampur Balughat area on the bank of the Padma River under Katakhali Police Station in Rajshahi. They used to cut casuarina trees and straw from the river char and sell them.

After the boat capsized last Tuesday, Kawsar and his son Ziarul could not be found. Kawsar's wife Zahera swam back and survived.

Their relatives said that on Thursday morning, Kawsar Ali's body floated in the Padma River in the Banglabazar area of Daulatpur Upazila in Kushtia.

They got the news through locals. Later at noon, the body of his son Ziarul were found a little distance from the spot, in the Talaimari area of Rajshahi. Fire Service personnel recovered the bodies and brought them, after which they arranged for burial.

Sumon Kaderi, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Katakhali Police Station, said that an unnatural death case has been filed at his police station on Thursday in this regard.
