DHAKA, July 30, 2026 (BSS - Dhaka University (DU) has temporarily suspended three teachers and an officer over various allegations, while four other faculty members have been relieved of all academic and administrative duties, a DU press release said today. 

The decisions were taken at a meeting of the DU Syndicate chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam.

According to the press release Professor Dr. Sadeka Halim of the Department of Sociology was temporarily suspended over charges including unprofessional conduct inside and outside the classroom and moral turpitude.

In addition, based on complaints from students across various batches and the findings of a fact-finding committee report, Professor Dr. Md. Shafiqul Islam and Professor Dr. Afroza Shelly of the Department of Nuclear Engineering were also temporarily suspended.

The Syndicate relieved Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Muhit of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology from his responsibilities as department chairman and barred him from all academic and administrative duties.
 
This decision was made due to alleged activities contrary to the spirit of the July Mass Uprising, anti-administration and anti-government propaganda, taking positions in favor of a banned organization, and issuing threats.

On similar grounds, Professor Dr. Abu Shara Shamsur Rouf of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Professor Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam (Rafiq Shahriar) of the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies were relieved of all academic and administrative duties. 

Furthermore, Professor Dr. Mohammad Bahauddin of the Department of Persian Language and Literature was relieved of all academic and administrative responsibilities over departmental irregularities and allegations of similarity-based plagiarism in M.Phil and Ph.D. theses.

In procedural and structural actions, the Syndicate formed a committee headed by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Abdus Salam, including all faculty deans, to review recruitment irregularities and verify recruitment transparency at DU between January 1, 2009, and June 2024. 

A separate committee, chaired by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane, was constituted to inspect research activities under the Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project —funded by the World Bank and the University Grants Commission (UGC) during the same period—to ensure funds were properly utilized.

The Syndicate also decided to take action against individuals, groups, and organizations involved in activities opposing the July spirit, with specific measures to be announced following necessary verification. 

Additionally, A.K.M. Mahbub Mustafa, Superintending Engineer (Civil) of the Chief Engineer's Office, was temporarily suspended for violating office discipline. 

To honor the martyrs of the July Uprising, the meeting finalized plans to construct a 'July Memorial' at the Mall Chattar adjacent to the Administrative Building, with its foundation stone scheduled for unveiling on August 5.
