Contributions of journalist Ruhul Amin Gazi fondly recalled
DHAKA, Sept 24, 2025 (BSS) – Speakers at a memorial meeting today recalled the contributions of journalist leader Ruhul Amin Gazi to the field of journalism saying he fought till death for the rights of journalists and to ensure free journalism and freedom of expression. The memorial meeting was jointly organized by Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) at Abdus Salam Hall of the Jatiya Press Club to mark the first death anniversary of BFUJ former President Ruhul Amin Gazi.  Former and current leaders of BFUJ, DUJ and Jatiya Press Club and senior journalists spoke at the memorial meeting with DUJ President Md. Shahidul Islam in the chair. Speakers said Ruhul Amin Gazi was always a voice of protest against injustice. He did not see who was behind him in adverse situations, they said, adding he always moved forward with courage. Noting that Ruhul Amin Gazi was a symbol of honest, fearless and courageous journalism, the speakers said, he did not bow down to any evil force in his journalistic life. He was an ideal for journalists for maintaining his position in practicing courageous journalism, they added. Highlighting the working life of Ruhul Amin Gazi, the speakers further said, Ruhul Amin Gazi has rendered many services to the nation.  He worked tirelessly till his death to achieve the rights of journalists. He had no alternative to achieve the rights of journalists, they said. This distinguished journalist had to be imprisoned for 18 months for opposing the injustice of the fascist government, yet he did not hesitate to protest against injustice, they added.   They said the ideals of Ruhul Amin Gazi and the path he showed will be followed by the present and future generations. Ruhul Amin Gazi will be remembered in the history of the country as a journalist leader, they said. The speakers said that Ruhul Amin Gazi was a persecuted and oppressed journalist. On the orders of the fascist government, he was imprisoned for 18 months without trial or guilt, they said, adding during that time, he was not allowed to take regular medicine and he was not even given necessary treatment and food.  Many journalists compromised with fascist Awami League but Ruhul Amin Gazi did not compromise with any injustice, they said.  They said he fought and struggled in the forefront of democracy all his life. Journalist Ruhul Amin Gazi, a former president of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), passed away on September 24 last year.  He was 68. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.

One dead, two wounded in shooting at US immigration facility
HOUSTON, Sept 24, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - One person was killed and two wounded in a shooting on Wednesday at a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in the US city of Dallas, officials said. The suspected gunman, who opened fire on the ICE facility from an adjacent building, is dead, the Dallas police department said in a post on X. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. "While we don't know motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them," Noem said on X. "It must stop." Local television station Fox4 said the three people shot were detainees in ICE custody. It said the gunman was a man on the roof of a building who shot himself as law enforcement agents approached. ICE deputy director Madison Sheahan told Fox News that no ICE officers were injured in the attack. "We've seen a lot of violence at ICE facilities, and this is not the first time that we've seen an attack, even this year at an ICE facility," Sheahan said. "The obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop," Vice President JD Vance JD Vance said on X. "I'm praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families." ICE is the government agency chiefly responsible for carrying out President Donald Trump's campaign pledge to expel millions of undocumented migrants from the United States. After ICE immigration raids in Los Angeles spurred unrest and protests earlier this year, Trump dispatched the National Guard and Marines to the California city. Another ICE facility in Texas was the target of an attack in July that left a police officer wounded in the neck. Ten people have been charged for their roles in the attack at the ICE center in the town of Alvarado. According to a criminal complaint, the assailants, dressed in black military-style clothing, shot fireworks at the ICE facility and spray-painted "Traitor" and "ICE Pig" on cars and a guard structure. The Alvarado incident came just days before a man armed with an assault rifle opened fire at a US Border Patrol facility in McAllen, Texas. The 27-year-old man fired dozens of rounds from an assault rifle at the entrance of the Border Patrol annex before being shot dead. Two police officers and a Border Patrol employee were injured.
