Sylhet must restore its lost glory in education: Abdul Kaiyum
Sylhet must restore its lost glory in education: Abdul Kaiyum
SYLHET, May 20, 2026 (BSS) - Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Administrator Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury today said Sylhet was once one of the country’s leading regions in education but it has failed to maintain that legacy.   “The region currently lags behind in various educational indicators,” he said and stressed the need for taking collective efforts to restore its past glory.   The SCC administrator was addressing a prize-giving ceremony and cultural function organized by Sylhet Government Women’s College here.   Highlighting Sylhet’s historic role in women’s education, Abdul Kaiyum said opportunities for higher education for women in the region were once very limited. Despite that, several pioneering women pursued higher education and created history, he added.   He mentioned that Shamsi Khanam Chowdhury was Sylhet’s first female graduate and studied at Aligarh Muslim University. He also noted that Leela Nag of Rajnagar in Moulvibazar was the first woman to pursue higher studies in English literature at the University of Dhaka in 1921.   He said Sylhet Government Women’s College has long been playing a significant role in expanding women’s education in the region. Many women who studied at the institution later assumed leadership roles in different important sectors of the country, making the college a pioneer in women’s education in Sylhet, he added.   However, he observed that the college is yet to achieve its expected level of development. He said former Finance and Planning Minister M. Saifur Rahman nationalized the college in the 1980s but many limitations still remain.   “There are still no opportunities for teaching important career-oriented subjects. We want to introduce new academic disciplines, create necessary teaching positions and work on overall infrastructural development,” he said.   Addressing the students, he emphasized that the higher secondary stage is crucial for pursuing higher education, as performance during this period shapes future career paths.    He urged students to avoid wasting time unnecessarily on digital devices and instead focus on their studies.   The programme was welcomed by Anupa Nahar Waldo, convener of the college’s literary and cultural competition committee.   Principal of the college Professor Md. Samsul Islam and its Vice-Principal Professor Dr. Mohammad Humayun Rashid Chowdhury. Acting Secretary of the Teachers’ Council Assistant Professor Nahida Akter, also spoke at the event as special guests.   Among others, Nehor Ranjan Purkayastha, officer for education, culture, library and social welfare at Sylhet City Corporation, and teachers and students of the college were present on the occasion.

Iran Guards vow war will 'spread far beyond region' if US resumes attacks
Iran Guards vow war will 'spread far beyond region' if US resumes attacks
TEHRAN, May 20, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned on Wednesday that the Middle East war will extend beyond the region if the United States and Israel resume attacks on the Islamic republic. "If the aggression against Iran is repeated, the promised regional war will this time spread far beyond the region, and our devastating blows will crush you," the Guards said in a statement on their website Sepah News. The warning comes after US President Donald Trump said Washington could strike Iran again if no deal on a lasting settlement is reached in the coming days. The two sides have escalated their threats while swapping proposals to end the war, which broke out on February 28. A ceasefire has been in place since April 8. "The American-Zionist enemy... must know that despite the offensive carried out against us using the full capabilities of the world's two most expensive armies, we have not deployed the full power of the Islamic revolution," the Guards said. The nearly 40-day war killed top Iranian leaders including supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, triggering retaliatory missile and drone attacks by Tehran across the region. On Tuesday, Trump offered a deadline of several days for resuming strikes if a deal is not agreed. He had said a day earlier that Gulf Arab leaders asked him to hold off on an attack at the 11th hour. "I'm saying two or three days, maybe Friday, Saturday, Sunday, something, maybe early next week, a limited period of time," he said. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on X that a "return to war will feature many more surprises".

Bangladesh to export organic meat in next 3 years: Minister
Bangladesh to export organic meat in next 3 years: Minister
DHAKA, May 20, 2026 (BSS)- Fisheries, Livestock and Agriculture Minister Mohammed Aminur Rashid has said Bangladesh will export certified organic grass-fed meat within next three years. “The country will export 100 percent natural grass-fed or non-GMO meat in future while many livestock animals eat feed containing genetically modified soya or corn”, he said. The minister said this while addressing a seminar titled ‘Australia-Bangladesh Research Showcase’ held at Hotel Inter-Continental here today. Financed by the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Australian government, the programme was jointly organized by Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) and Australian leading Charles Sturt University (CSU). The main theme of the seminar was “Climate-resilient food systems–practical solutions and partnerships”. The minister said, safe and nutritional food now becomes very much important in the present world. Invention of genetically modified or GMO food could not achieve full benefit for the people. So, people are ultimately waiting for safe and organic food for getting overall health benefit. Regarding the research-based invention of Napier grass, a feed commonly used across the tropics and subtropics for dairy and meat production, the minister said the new grass variety which containing 18 percent protein, has been invented. Noting that the innovation of such high-protein and drought tolerant grass variety for the livestock is a remarkable progress in the livestock sector, he said this innovation will play a significant role in producing high quality animal feed in low cost. The animal feed will reduce meat production cost and it would possible to bring the meat price comparatively at a tolerable limit for the common people, the minister added. Addressing the researchers and scientists, Rashid said opportunity should be created for conducting research and innovative works for the welfare of the country.  The innovation by the Bangladeshi scientists will get recognition in coming days at the international level and it will more enrich country’s livestock and agriculture sector.  Regarding the higher livestock feed cost, state minister for fisheries and livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku said if the livestock feed cost is reduce the meat production cost will also come down enabling the consumers to buy meat at affordable price. He emphasized research and technology based initiative aiming to ensure quality grass and animal feed in less cost. With BLRI Director General (DG) Dr Shakila Faruque in the chair, the seminar also was attended by fisheries and livestock secretary M Delwar Hossain and Australian Deputy High Commissioner to Bangladesh Clinton Pobke. Director General of the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) Shahzaman Khan also spoke on the occasion.  BLRI director Dr M Zillur Rahman and Professor of Farming Systems and Deputy Director of the Gulbali Institute at Charles Sturt University Professor Cameron Clark gave the welcome address at the seminar. BLRI’s senior scientific officer and project coordinator Dr Mohammad Khairul Bashar presented a key note paper titled ‘Environmentally sustainable low-cost beef production practical solutions and partnership”.
