DHAKA, July 24, 2026 (BSS) - President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh Mohammed Sahabuddin today submitted his resignation to Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram, citing his health complications.

The Speaker accepted his resignation at 5:01 pm, said a press release signed by President's Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam.

In his resignation letter addressed to the Speaker, the President said, "I am seriously ill. I am suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney complications. I have undergone bypass surgery. Recently, medical tests detected a disease called Autonomic Neuropathy. Due to this illness, I sometimes lose consciousness briefly. Because of the prevalence of these diseases, I am physically and mentally incapable of discharging the responsibilities of such an important constitutional post of President. I need long-term treatment."

"In this situation, in accordance with the provisions of Article 50(3) of the Constitution, I am resigning from the President's position," the resign letter reads.

As per Article 54 of the Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad will discharge the duties of the President until a new President is elected and assumes office.

Mohammed Sahabuddin assumed office as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023.
