We badly needed to win such a close game: Mehidy

DHAKA, Dec 4, 2022 (BSS) - Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the hero of Bangladesh's thrilling one-wicket victory against India, put the team's priority on top, as he insisted that they needed to win such a close game in a bid to bolster the confidence because many times in the past, they failed to secure victory from such a position.

"We needed to win such sort of close match badly. Because we were losing again and again from such situation. We lost a lot of matches after closing on in victory. But today we were able to win the match so I feel very good," Mehidy said here today.

Mehidy held his nerve to steer the home side to the unlikely win after staring down a deficit of 51 runs with one wicket in hand.

He finished on 38 not out from 39 balls with four fours and two sixes and was helped by No. 11 batsman Mustafizur Rahman, who finished unbeaten on 10 as Bangladesh reached the winning target of 187-9 in 46 overs.

It was Bangladesh's second partnership of 50-plus runs for the 10th wicket but the first that resulted in a victory.

"Mustafizur is a very good friend of mine and has been very supportive. One thing I really liked was that he was very confident. He kept telling me that there was nothing to worry about. He said 'I was blocking the ball' which meant he would not be out. He also said if the ball hits the body there is no problem but I will not be out. I love seeing her confidence and my confidence is boosted thanks to his confidence," Mehidy revealed the discussion between him and Mustafizur during the epic partnership.

"I took the risk initially when we needed 50 runs. But I was a bit more worried when 10/14 runs were needed because in the past we got so close and lost and that has happened to us a lot. But Mustafizur encouraged me, it was very nice. He was saying one thing again and again that there is no rush now and no need to hit six. He told me to play in the gap. I thought so too. I was much more clear about my game plan as to what I was going to do. Alhamdulillah it went very well."
