Court rejects bail petitions of Fakhrul, Abbas

DHAKA, Dec 12, 2022 (BSS) - A Dhaka court today rejected the bail petitions of 224 BNP leaders-activists, including party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee member Mirza Abbas, in a case filed with Paltan police station over planning and provoking attacks on police on December 7.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court Magistrate Shafi Uddin passed the order after concluding the hearing of the case.

Lawyers of the BNP leaders-activists argued for the bail of 224 people, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Mirza Abbas. On the other hand, the state argued against the bail. After hearing both sides, the court denied bail of 224 people, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Mirza Abbas, Dhaka South BNP convener Abdus Salam, BNP Publicity Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury and Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon.

Law enforcers picked up Fakhrul and Abbas from their residences around 3:00am on December 9. On the same day, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate sent Fakhrul and Abbas to jail in the case, rejecting their bail plea.

The case was filed with Paltan Model Police Station on December 8, a day after the clash took place in front of BNP's Nayapaltan office.

The two BNP leaders were shown arrested on charge of provoking party members to launch an attack on police in Nayapaltan area.
