Bangladesh-German Dev Coop negotiations ended with new commitments of 191m Euros

DHAKA, Dec 8, 2022 (BSS) - The two-day Bangladesh-German Development Cooperation Negotiations 2022 completed today with new commitments of 191 million Euros to Bangladesh.

The fresh commitments came from the last day of the two-day bilateral negotiations on development cooperation between the government of Bangladesh and the government of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The delegation of the government of Bangladesh was headed by Sharifa Khan, Secretary, Economic Relations Division (ERD) and by Barbara Sch"fer, Head of Division, South Asia in the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), said a press release.

ERD Secretary Sharifa Khan made the opening remarks.
 
Barbara Sch"fer in her opening statement said, "The best prevention of the devastating consequences of climate change is the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. I would like to highlight that Germany welcomes Bangladesh's decision to give up plans to construct new coal-fired power plants and explore the possibilities of alternative sources for energy generation".

The negotiations took place in a friendly atmosphere of constructive cooperation. Both the parties discussed issues of development cooperation including climate change and energy, training and skills development, biodiversity, human rights and good governance. 

The two delegations had an open and fruitful exchange of views on ongoing projects and programmes in the field of Financial and Technical Cooperation (FC and TC) as well as on future development cooperation.

As a result of the negotiations, commitments for the following areas of interventions of German-Bangladesh mutual Cooperation were made:

1. Renewable energy and energy efficiency; 2. Sustainable urban development; 3. Technical and vocational education and training; 4.
 Socially and environmentally sound supply chains, trade and sustainable infrastructure; and 5. Biodiversity.

For the government of Bangladesh, Uttam Kumar Karmaker, Additional Secretary and Wing Chief (Europe), ERD made the concluding remarks.

Since the last G2G negotiations, Germany made a commitment of total of 275.1 million Euro (around Taka 2916 crore) to Bangladesh. The overall support from Germany since 1972 reached more than 3.2 billion Euros.
