75.85 pc Univ Students suffering mental trauma due to academic pressure: Research

DHAKA, Oct 8, 2022 (BSS) - Around 75 percent of the university students have suffered from mental trauma during the post pandemic period due to academic pressure which include session jam caused by the long break, losing interest to study, frustration with academic results and the inability to comprehend the readings.

"75.85 per cent of the students faced various types of psychological and constructive problems due to post-covid academic stress", according to a survey titled "Suicidal Propensity of University Students and The Impact of Academic Pressure on Their Mental Health", conducted by Aachol Foundation.

The findings were revealed today at a virtual press conference, attended by retired professor of DU Clinical Psychology department Dr. Mohammad Mahmudur Rahman, Assistant Professor of Jagannath university education and research Institute Md. Shahnewaz Khan Chandan and Aachol Foundation President Tansen Rose.

Around 46.65 percent students lose their concentration to study compared to pre-covid period while 10.30 percent suffered from mental stress due to frequent exams students were unable to adapt, said the study.
 
The excessive syllabus for exams has caused problems to 12.44 percent of the students while 20.73 percent of total interviewed students were unable to understand readings properly as they had to cover a large syllabus within short period of time, added the research.

The researchers said that 6.71 percent students failed to give enough time to their family members due to academic pressure which caused a lot of distress for the students.

Of the total participants, 57.99 percent of the students reported excessive fear and anxiety about their own physical and mental health which affected their lives while 80.79 percent found changes in daily behavior, such as depression and sudden tiredness which affected their academic life.

A total of 1,640 students from 38 public universities, 47 private universities, madrasas and national university affiliated educational institutions took part in the survey.
