Death-row convict held 16-yr after killing wife

DHAKA, Sept 7, 2022 (BSS) - Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a death-row convict, who has been absconding over the last 16 years after killing his wife for dowry, from Ashulia in Dhaka on Tuesday.

The arrested was identified as Ujjal Pramanik.

Director of RAB-3 Lt Col Arif Mohiuddin Ahmed confirmed the matter at a press conference at RAB Media Center at Karwan Bazar in the capital today.

Ujjal was sentenced to death by Bogura Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 on July 24 last.

After killing wife, he went into hiding in Gazipur. When his death sentenced was pronounced, he changed his location and shifted to a house in Dhaka's Ashulia.

Ujjal, hailing from Bogura, got married to the victim Alo Begum, a resident of the same area, in 2006 taking Taka 30,000 as dowry.

He demanded another Taka 50,000 dowry to meet up the expense of going abroad. As his wife was unable to manage the money, Ujjal strangled his wife to death with the help of his relatives.
