Higher inflation may be challenging for proposed budget: lawmakers

DHAKA, June 20, 2022 (BSS) – Lawmakers today opined that inflation might be challenging for the proposed budget as after pandemic the global economy  is now facing crisis due  to Russia-Ukraine war.

Taking part in the general discussion on the proposed budget for 2022-23 fiscal in the Jatiya Sangsad, the lawmakers described the proposed budget as pro-people, saying higher inflation rate due to global war will create a big challenge for the proposed budget.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on June 9 in the Jatiya Sangsad unveiled a Taka 6,78,064 crore national budget for 2022-23 fiscal setting the GDP growth target at 7.5 percent amid the economic fallout due to the novel corona virus pandemic coupled with ongoing Ukraine-Russia war.

“The developing country like Bangladesh would have to spend 8.2 percent more in import nine essential commodities like gas, oil from the world market and it will increase import inflation,” said Kazi Nabil Ahmed of Jashore-3.  

Citing high inflation throughout the world due to corona and Russia-Ukraine war, he said now the global inflation rate stands at 50 percent while it is 8.3pc in USA, 9.9pc in United Kingdom, 8.3pc in Spain, 69.97pc in Turkey,17pc in Russia, 7.79pc in India and 13pc in Pakistan while it is only  6.59pc in Bangladesh.

Criticizing BNP-Jammat, Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman said Bangladesh now becomes a role model in development, but the BNP is denying total development.

The huge inflation rate may be brought under control through huge employment, said Pankaj Nath of Barishal-4. So, the proposed budget is time befitting to check the inflation, he added.

Participating in proposed budget discussion, Jatiya Party lawmaker Rana Mohammad Sohel of Nilphamari-3 said the government should be more conscious in budget preparation  as it is very much concerning that still country’s foreign credit is 13 percent of the GDP.
