Proposed budget to help peoples hope & aspirations: lawmakers

DHAKA, June 19, 2022 (BSS) - Lawmakers today said the proposed budget will help to fulfill hope and aspiration of the common people of the country as the proposed budget has preferred life and livelihood of the people.

Taking part in the general discussion on the proposed budget for 2022-23 fiscal in the Jatiya Sangsad, the lawmakers said the proposed budget is time befitting and peoples friendly despite global economic meltdown due to pandemic and Russia-Ukraine conflict.
 
Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on June 9 in the Jatiya Sangsad unveiled a Taka 6,78,064 crore national budget for 2022-23 fiscal setting the GDP growth target at 7.5 percent amid the economic fallout due to the novel corona virus pandemic coupled with ongoing Ukraine-Russia war.

"The proposed budget has reduced duty on local IT goods, agricultural inputs, animal feed and it will bring greater benefit for the poor and lower income people," said Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim of Gopalganj-2.

Criticizing BNP-Jammat, the ruling party lawmaker said although the BNP-Jammat have forecasted that Bangladesh will be Sri Lanka, but the country will never become Sri Lanka economically under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Citing high inflation throughout the world due to corona and Russia-Ukraine war, Selim said now the global inflation rate stands at 50 percent while it is 8.3pc in the USA, 9.9pc in the United Kingdom, 8.3pc in Spain, 69.97pc in Turkey, 17pc in Russia, 7.79pc in India and 13pc in Pakistan while it is only 6.59pc in Bangladesh.

Praising the Finance Minister, Workers Party lawmaker Rashed Khan Menon said the finance minister has taken some good initiatives for protecting the local industries. He, however, urged the government to increase individual tax limit from Taka 3 lakh to Taka 4 lakh.

"The proposed budget is 11 times more than the budget placed by the BNP-Jammat in 2006-07 fiscal year," said Tanvir Shakil Joy of Sirajganj-1.

BNP lawmakers in parliament are usually misguiding the people by presenting false information, said Shahiduzzaman of Naogaon-2. "People will never vote them [BNP-Jammat] whatever they said against the government regarding the development," he added.

Participating in proposed budget discussion, BNP lawmaker Barrister Rumeen Farhana said the proposed budget will accelerate the possibilities country's economic meltdown like Sri Lanka.

Treasury bench members Engineer Mosharraf Hossain of Chattogram-1, Direndra Devnath Sambhu of Borguna-1, Shafiul Islam of Dhaka-10, Umme Kulsum Smrity of Gaibandha-3, SM Shahjada of Patuakhali-3, Enamul Huq of Rajshahi-4, Begum Shabnam Jahan of women seat-3 ,Habib Hasan of Dhaka -18, Habibur Rahman Khandoker of Sylhet-9, Syed Rubina Akhter, Begum Nargis Rahman, Mrs Tahmina Begum, Mahfuzur Rahman of Chattogram-3, Nadira Yasmin Jolly, Jatiya Party lawmakers Ahsan Adilur Rahman of Nilphamari-4 and Golam Kibria Tipu of Barishal-3, took part in the discussion.

Earlier, they paid their cordial tribute to the memory of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, four national leaders, martyred freedom fighters and also those who made their utmost sacrifices during the War of Liberation and all subsequent democratic movements in the country.
