Concerted efforts to identify obstetric fistula patients underscored

SIRAJGANJ, June 13, 2022 (BSS) - Concerted efforts of all the government and non-government organizations can be the best ways of identifying the patients suffering from obstetric fistula to get them relief from their long-lasting pain.

If the patients were identified properly, they could be cured through treatment and other need-based rehabilitation as there are specialized hospitals and facilities for the benevolent activities.

Health experts and development activists came up with the observation while addressing a workshop on safe surgery at the conference room of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital in the district today.

The Civil Surgeon Office and LAMB Hospital jointly hosted the workshop supported by UNFPA Bangladesh and Directorate General of Health Services under the FREEei Project.

Civil Surgeon Dr Ram Pada Roy addressed the meeting as chief guest while Deputy Medical Director of LAMB Hospital Dr Beatrice Ambauen facilitated with Superintendent of the hospital Dr Saiful Islam in the chair. UNFPA Field Officer Dr Kaniz Fatima also spoke on the occasion.

Dr Tahmina and Mahatab Liton from the LAMB-UNFPA- FRRei Project gave an illustration on the issue along with their project activities and service deliveries during their PowerPoint presentation.

The meeting was told that safe surgery is important to prevent complications during operations like dangerous bleeding or a bladder injury leading to severe incontinence (fistula). Through safe surgery patients can be assured to get successful operations to be cured from their diseases.

Fistula is one of the most serious and tragic childbirth injuries which leave women with incontinence problems and often leads to chronic medical problems, depression, social isolation and deepening poverty.

Dr Tahmina, however, observed that the problem is preventable with the correct medical assistance and its occurrence is a violation of human rights and a reminder of gross inequities in the society.

She said the LAMB Hospital is implementing need-based programmes including case Identification from the community, referral for diagnosis, timely management, motivation, counseling, follow up and comprehensive rehabilitation and reintegration to free the society from obstetric fistula by 2030.
