UK bans exports to Russia that can be used against Ukraine

LONDON, April 26, 2022 (BSS /TASS) - The UK government introduces a ban on
export to Russia of those products that can be used against the people of
Ukraine, according to a statement published on Monday night by the UK
Department for International Trade.

"The UK has also announced an export ban on products and technology that
Russia could use to repress the heroic people of Ukraine. Products targeted
could include interception and monitoring equipment," the document said.

The agency also announced the cancellation of tariffs and quotas on
Ukrainian products. "All tariffs on goods imported from Ukraine will now be
reduced to zero and all quotas will be removed under the free trade
agreement, providing Ukraine economic support in their hour of need," the UK
government reported.

It is noted that the decision on cutting tariffs was made in response to a
request by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

According to the document, tariff measures are part of broad UK economic
support to Ukraine, including 1 bln pounds in loan guarantees. "Removing
tariffs on key Ukrainian exports including barley, honey, tinned tomatoes and
poultry will help Ukrainian businesses and producers when they need it most,"
the statement emphasized.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a televised
address that in response to a request by the heads of the Donbass republics
he had made a decision to carry out a special military operation in order to
protect people "who have been suffering from abuse and genocide by the Kiev
regime for eight years." The Russian leader stressed that Moscow had no plans
of occupying Ukrainian territories. Following this, the US, the EU, the UK
and a number of other countries announced the introduction of sanctions
against Russian legal entities and private individuals.
