World Malaria Day tomorrow

DHAKA, April 24, 2022 (BSS) - The World Malaria Day will be observed in the country tomorrow as elsewhere across the globe with the theme "Harness innovation to reduce the malaria disease burden and save lives."

The World Malaria Day, which was instituted by the World Health Assembly at its 60th session in May 2007, is a day for recognising the global efforts to control malaria.

In Bangladesh, different organisations have chalked out various programmes to mark the day. Awareness programmes will be held for controlling the malaria disease.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) sources said three CHT districts -- Bandarban, Rangamati and Khagrachari -- are the most malaria-infected region in the country.

As CHT is a malaria-prone region of the country, the authorities has given special attention in three CHT districts to make the region malaria-free.

Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease that continues to have a devastating impact on the health and livelihood of people around the world.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2020, there were an estimated 241 million new cases of malaria and 627, 000 malaria-related deaths in 85 countries. More than two thirds of deaths were among children under the age of 5 living in the WHO African Region.
