'Bangladesh achieves laudable success in reducing disaster risks'

 RANGPUR, March 11, 2022 (BSS) - Bangladesh has achieved a laudable success
in reducing disaster risks to become a global role through ensuring efficient
disaster management and adapting to adverse impacts of climate change.

 Official and experts made the observation at a post-rally discussion held on
Shishu Niketon High School ground to celebrate the National Disaster
Preparedness Day-2022 on Thursday afternoon in the city.

 The Department of Disaster Management under the Ministry of Disaster
Management and Relief and a number of NGOs extended assistance to celebrate
the day with colourful programmes.

 The programmes included bringing out a colourful rally, discussion and mock
drills as early preparedness during earthquake and fire incidents on the
school ground.

 Fire Service and Civil Defense personnel and volunteers of Bangladesh Red
Crescent Society (BDRCS) and Scouts demonstrated mock firefighting and
earthquake management drills in presence of officials, students, teachers and
common people.

 Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC-General) Md. Golam Rabbani led the rally
that paraded the city streets with participation of students, scouts,
officials, employees, representatives of different NGOs and voluntary
organisations.

 Later, the ADC (General) addressed the discussion as the chief guest with
Headmaster of Shishu Niketon High School Bimal Chandra Roy in the chair.

 Deputy Assistant Director of Rangpur Fire Service and Civil Defense Station
Md. Abdus Salam and Secretary of Rangpur unit of BDRCS Rawshanul Kawser
Sangram, among others, addressed.

 The speakers discussed on current natural disaster situation due to the
climate change putting stress on imparting training and education,
disseminating information and warnings among common people to reduce the
disaster risks.

 Abdus Salam said the government has taken massive steps to further
strengthen the efficient emergency response management systems and adopt
early preparedness for post-disaster management to reduce losses of human
lives and properties.

 The chief guest said Bangladesh has achieved global appreciation as a role
model of disaster management through efficient management of floods, tidal
surges, cyclones, droughts and erosion reducing losses of human lives.
 
He put special emphasis on engaging comprehensive GO-NGO efforts to create
adequate awareness among common people on adopting early preparedness to
reduce risks during natural disasters.
