Suspended DIG Mizan gets 3-year jail, Basir 8-year in graft case

     DHAKA, Feb 23, 2022 (BSS) - A court here today convicted and sentenced

suspended deputy inspector general (DIG) of police Mizanur Rahman to three-
year imprisonment and suspended director of the Anti-Corruption Commission
(ACC) Khandaker Enamul Basir to 8-year jail in a case lodged over leaking
official information and taking bribes.

     Judge Sheikh Nazmul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 pronounced the
judgement in presence of both the convicts and sent them to jail with convict
warrants.

     The court found Mizanur guilty under sections 165 (a) and 109 of the
Code of Criminal Procedure.

     The court also found Khandaker Enamul Basir guilty under section 161 of
the CrPC, section 5(2) of money laundering prevention act and Anti-Corruption
Act. He was sentenced to three-year imprisonment under section 161 and
sentenced to five-year imprisonment and fined Taka 80 lakh under money
laundering prevention act. Both the sentences would run concurrently.

     The court on February 10 had set today to pronounce the judgement after
the conclusion of closing arguments by both the prosecution and defence.

     The anti-graft body on January 24, pleaded for the highest penalty for
the two accused in the case. The accused on January 3 had pleaded not guilty
in their statements in self-defence in the case.

     The court on March 18, 2020, framed charges against the two accused in
the case.

     Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Qayesh on February 9, 2020,
accepted the charge sheet and had transferred the case for further
proceedings to Dhaka Special Judge Court-4.

     ACC Director Sheikh Mohammad Fanafilya on January 19, 2020, filed the
charge sheet against the duo for allegedly leaking information and taking
bribes.

     The anti-graft body on July 16, 2019, filed the case with its Dhaka
district coordination office-1.
