Nationwide OMS continues for lower income people: Sadhan

DHAKA, Feb 2, 2022 (BSS) – Food Minister SadhanChandra Majumder today said the government is operating open market sale (OMS) throughout the country aiming to reduce food scarcity for the lower income people. 

“OMS rice selling programme is now being continued at district, upazila and municipality level across the country for the lower income people,” he said. 

The minister said this while addressing as the chief guest marking ‘National Food Safety Day-2022’ at city’s BIAM auditorium. 

Regarding highest food stock in the country, food minister said the country witnessed huge food stock during the pandemic and none were left die due to food scarcity. Rice is being sold through open market sale(OMS) across the country. 

Food minister said Bangladesh has no food crisis for its 18 crore people, but the efforts are underway to reach nutritious food for all.” Coordinated efforts would help to ensure safe food along with play significantly in forming a healthy nation,” he hoped. 

“People irrespective from growers to consumers must have to develop their sense and willingness to ensure safe and healthy food for all,” he said. 

The national food Safety day is being observed in the country for the fifth times with a theme of “Susastho er Mulniti, Nirapod Khaddo O Susastho Bidhi”. 

After forming a safe food authority by the relentless effort of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the minister said the authority is working relentlessly to make safe food available for the consumers.

Initiatives of raising consumers’ awareness along with sensitizing the growers and the traders have been taken through organizing meeting, seminars and operating mobile courts, he told the function.

Bangladesh is now surplus in fish, meat and milk production and steps have been taken to make these food diversified, said Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim as the special guest.

Moreover, laboratories have also been established to reaching and ensuring quality fishes, meat and milk to the consumers, he added. 

Chairman of the Safe Food Authority M Abdul Qaiyum gave welcome address at the function while Food Secretary Dr Mst Nazmanara chaired it.
