Govt to recover all city canals: Tajul

DHAKA, Jan 25, 2022 (BSS) – Local Government, Rural Department (LGRD) and Cooperatives Minister Tajul Islam today said the government will recover all the city canals, which have been grabbed earlier.

He said this while visiting a recovery drive at Ramchandrapur canal at Basila in the capital's Mohammadpur area.

Tajul said it will be possible to ease waterlogging in the capital and gift the city dwellers a modern-looking and livable city, if the recovered canals are repaired.

He said those, who invested their money for construction of illegal installations on the illegally occupied public land, will be generally affected now.

This will send a message everywhere that there is no chance to escape by constructing illegal infrastructures, he added.

The LGRD minister warned that apart from canal recovery, all the grabbed lands would be recovered in the city.

“No grabber will be spared. The government will do everything possible to ensure the welfare of the people,” he said.

Tajul said water transport would be introduced by connecting all the canals in the capital.

To this end, he said the project is being taken up by holding several meetings with foreign investors. “The work will begin very soon. We have to restore the heritage of Dhaka city,” he added.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Md Atiqul Islam, local lawmaker, city Awami League leaders and ward councilors accompanied the minister during the visit.
