Promoting agriculture imperative to ensure food security

RAJSHAHI, Dec 2, 2022 (BSS) - Integrated efforts of all the government and non-government organizations concerned can be the best way of furthermore promoting agriculture to ensure food security of the gradually rising population.

There are enormous scopes of boosting yields of various crops, fruit and vegetables in the region, including its vast Barind tract, after the best uses modern technologies and high yielding varieties as well as the existing natural resources.

Utmost emphasis should be given on reaching the modern technologies and varieties to the grassroots farmers so that they can derive total benefits of those in terms of boosting productivity.

Agricultural scientists and experts came up with the observation while addressing an institutional public hearing at the training room of Regional Fruit Research Station here today.
 
Training and Communication Wing of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) hosted the programme under its National Integrity Strategy Work plan- 2022-2023.

Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture Dr Bashirul Alam and BARI Director General (DG) Dr Debasish Sarker addressed the meeting as chief and special guests respectively with BARI Director Dr Ferdousi Islam in the chair.

Additional Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension Shamsul Wadud, Director of Regional Pulse Research Centre Dr Mohiuddin, BARI Principal Scientific Officer Dr Shafiqul Islam and Senior Scientific Officer Abdur Razzaque also spoke.

In his remarks, Dr Bashirul Alam underscored the need for following the directives and instructions given by the government properly for substantial and sustainable promotion of agriculture.

He said the government under the dynamic and farsighted leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has attached top priority to agriculture for enhancing productivity.

All the field level extension and research officials and others concerned should supplement the government endeavor through discharging their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty.

Dr Alam called for ensuring transparency and accountability in the agriculture services for welfare of the farmers in general.
BARI DG Dr Debasish Sarker said there are scores of challenges in the field of agriculture, particularly declining arable land, population rising, adverse impact of climate change and resource constraints, and called for development of the agriculture sector through facing the challenges.
