Five awarded death penalty for gang rape in Khulna

KHULNA, Sept 7, 2022 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced five people to
death and fined Taka 20,000 each in a case of gang-rape with a girl on March
23 in 2011.

The Judge of Khulna Women and Child Oppression Control Tribunal Abdus Salam
Khan handed down the verdict in presence of the two convicts Ala Akbor alias
Hridoy and Mehedi Hasan alias Ebu.

The other three convicts-- Sohel, Abdullah and Mohon-- were at large after
getting bail, Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Farid Ahmed confirmed.

According to the public prosecutor (PP) Advocate Farid, a 14-year old girl
went near a tube well of Bihari camp no-1 under Khalishpur Police Station in
the city to wash her face in the evening on March 23 in 2011.

Mohon, a neighbor of the victim, took her near a Shia mosque out of the camp.
Ali Akbor abducted her from there on a motorcycle and took her to a banana
garden near a dam of Charerhat area.

A gang of criminals raped her in turn there and threatened in dire
consequence that they will kill her if she disclose the matter. Later, the
accused fell down her near Arabia Mosque beside the Bihari colony.

Local people rescued her and admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital
(KMCH).

On March 24, 2011, victim's mother filed a gang-rape case with Khalishpur
Police Station over the incident accusing the five persons.

Later, police pressed charge-sheet against the five criminals in Khulna Chief
Metropolitan Magistrate Court on June 22, 2011.

Besides, there were a total of 17 witnesses in this case, of whom 12
testified in the court, the PP added.
