One gets life-term jail for abducting housewife

RANGPUR, Aug 7, 2022 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to life-term
rigorous imprisonment for abducting a housewife from Sultanpur village under
Mithapukur upazila of the district 21 years back.
 
The court also fined the convict Taka 50,000, or in default, to undergo one
year more in prison.

Judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 of Rangpur
Md. Mostafa Kamal handed down the sentence in absence of the convict this
afternoon.
 
The convict is Mazharul Islam Jewel, son of Helal Uddin of Chhoto Mirjapur
village in the same upazila. He is the husband of a cousin of the abducted
housewife.

Prosecution said Jewel abducted Selina Begum, wife of Mojnu Miah of Sultanpur
village on October 7, 2001.

Knowing the incident, Mojnu Miah with his relatives went to the nearby
Barodorga area, caught Jewel and handed him over to Mithapukur police
station.

Later, Mojnu Miah filed a case against Jewel with Mithapukur police station.
 
After getting bail in the case, Jewel went into hiding.
 
Police submitted a charge sheet against the accused to the court after
investigating the case.
 
After examining witnesses and other evidence of the case, the court sentenced
the accused to life imprisonment and fined him Taka 50,000.

Special Public Prosecutor of the Women and Children Repression Prevention
Tribunal-1 of Rangpur Advocate Khandaker Rafiq Hasnine told reporters that
police could not rescue the kidnapped housewife Selina Begum so far.
