Brother & sister get life term imprisonment for throwing acid on cousins

CHATTOGRAM, June 1, 2022 (BSS) - A Chattogram court today awarded life- term imprisonment to a woman and her brother for attacking two cousins with acid in city's Badurtala area in 2010.

Chattogram Fifth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Nargis Akhter delivered the verdict in the decade-old case.

Both of the accused -- Farzana Latif Saki ,35, and Iftekhar Latif Sadi ,33, -- were in court. They were taken to jail after the verdict was delivered.

Saki was also fined Taka 50,000, while Sadi was fined Taka 30,000 by the court.

The victims - Mumtaha Karina and Salnabil Tasnim - were 19 and 16 years old at the time of the incident. The convicts are their cousins.

Taslim Uddin, an additional public prosecutor, said the convicts also received a seven-year prison sentence under another section of the law. Both sentences will be run concurrently, he said.

He said that Karina is younger than Farzana Latif Saki, she was jealous that her cousin was getting married first and threw acid on her face for that reason on October 2 in 2010. Her brother, Sadi, helped by bringing her the acid, he added.

Karina and Tasnim's father Anwarul Kabir filed a case with city's Panchliash thana over the incident.

Police arrested the then college student Farzana Latif Saki and her brother Sadi over the incident.

Police submitted charge sheet on December 20 in 2010 against the convicts while the court framed charges against them on Apr 28, 2011.

The court pronounced the verdict today after examining 22 prosecution witnesses out of 25 awarded the judgement convicting two accused in presence of them. They have been sent to jail after announcing the verdict, he added.
