JU students demand ban on Awami League
JU students demand ban on Awami League
JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, May 9, 2025 (BSS) - A group of Jahangirnagar University students staged a demonstration today, demanding a ban on the Bangladesh Awami League for committing crimes against humanity during the July Uprising 2024. Protesters assembled a procession around 12:45 am from the university's Bot Tola area and marched towards the main entrance of the university. Following the procession, they enforced a blockade on Dhaka-Aricha highway around 1:00 am, which lasted for half an hour. Arifuzzaman Uzzal, a postgraduate student of the Marketing department, said, "The mass murderers Awami League (AL) have no right to do their politics in this country. If any group attempts to rehabilitate the Awami League in any form, the students and the masses will produce the same verdict against them that was produced against Awami League and Sheikh Hasina." Jahidul Islam Bappy, an honours final year student of the English department, criticized the ill-motivated efforts of the Awami League (AL) to destabilize the country and called for the interim government to ban AL as soon as possible to prevent chaos. Touhid Siam, a postgraduate student of the International Relations department, moderated the programme.

Japan's Panasonic targets 10,000 job cuts worldwide
TOKYO, May 9, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - Japanese electronics giant Panasonic said Friday it was targeting 10,000 job cuts worldwide as part of efforts to boost productivity among its workforce. The group said it planned to "thoroughly review operational efficiency... mainly in sales and indirect departments, and reevaluate the numbers of organisations and personnel actually needed". "Through these measures, the company will optimise our personnel on a global scale," it said in a statement. "This measure targets 10,000 employees (5,000 in Japan and 5,000 overseas) at consolidated companies," it said. The figure represents around four percent of the firm's total workforce of nearly 230,000. The cuts will be implemented mainly in the financial year ending in March, "in accordance with the labour laws, rules, and regulations of each country and region". Pioneering electronic appliances from rice cookers to batteries to video recorders, the brand became a global household behemoth in the latter half of the 20th century.
