Baul singers-supporters demand protection, security
DHAKA, Nov 28, 2025 (BSS) - Baul singers and supporters today urged the government to enhance protection to safeguard them and the belief that they inherit and contain to preserve the native Baul culture. To place the demand, the Baul supporters arranged a gathering at the Central Shaheed Minar this afternoon. The speakers, from the gathering, said that the Baul community has always practiced peace, tolerance, and spirituality, and they never choose the path of violence. They feared that any attack on shrines or spiritual centers would put the very existence of Baul culture at risk in the country.  They called for enhanced security to protect Bengali folk music, the spiritual heritage of the folk and Baul cultural tradition.   The speakers said that Baul music and folk traditions are an integral part of Bengal’s history, carrying messages of humanity, compassion, and spirituality for generations. Urging social harmony and peace, they said if Bauls are being targeted through distorted religious interpretations, the native and local culture will be endangered. Several Baul singers and supporters from across the country joined the event with Poet Farhad Mazhar as key speaker.

Markets muted in thin trade, hit by data centre glitch
Markets muted in thin trade, hit by data centre glitch
LONDON, Nov 28, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - Stock markets were little changed Friday, capping a solid week driven by expectations of more US rate cuts, with trading thinned by the Thanksgiving holiday and a data centre outage. Trading on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, one of the world's major trading operators, was halted by a technical outage first reported at 0240 GMT Friday. "Due to a cooling issue at CyrusOne data centers, our markets are currently halted," the CME said in a statement. Market participants rely heavily on CME platforms to manage risk through futures contracts tied, for example, to stock indices, interest rates and currencies. The outage also froze pricing on the US benchmark crude contract, WTI, for several hours. "It's been a while since we've had such a long outage," said Neil Wilson, UK investor strategist at Saxo Markets. "Good news was it happened during the US holiday so there was not a lot of action and orders," he said. With Wall Street closed Thursday for Thanksgiving and operating a half-day Friday, investors took a breather from AI-fuelled debates that had helped drive November trade. Without direction from New York, European and Asian markets moved with little conviction. London, Paris, Tokyo and Shanghai edged marginally higher, while Frankfurt and Hong Kong slipped. Focus this week has been firmly on growing expectations that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates again next month. A string of top Fed officials have backed a third straight reduction, mostly citing a weakening labour market despite elevated inflation. Attention now turns to a range of data releases over the next week or so that could play a role in the bank's final decision, with private hiring, services activity and personal consumption expenditure -- the Fed's preferred gauge of inflation. With the government shutdown postponing or cancelling the release of some key data, closely watched non-farm payrolls figures are now due in mid-December, after the Fed's policy decision. Markets see around an 85 percent chance of a cut next month and three more in 2026. Meanwhile, the yen was erratic against the dollar after data showed inflation in Tokyo, seen as a bellwether for Japan, came in a little higher than expected, reigniting talk on whether the central bank will hike interest rates in the coming months. The Japanese unit remains under pressure against the greenback amid concerns about Japan's fiscal outlook and pledges for more borrowing. - Key figures at around 1115 GMT - London - FTSE 100: UP 0.1 percent at 9,699.71 points Paris - CAC 40: UP 0.1 percent at 8,107.84 Frankfurt - DAX: DOWN 0.1 percent at 23,755.67 Tokyo - Nikkei 225: UP 0.2 percent at 50,253.91 (close) Hong Kong - Hang Seng Index: DOWN 0.3 percent at 25,858.89 (close) Shanghai - Composite: UP 0.3 percent at 3888.60 (close) New York - Dow: Closed for a public holiday Euro/dollar: DOWN at $1.1558 from $1.1602 on Thursday Pound/dollar: DOWN at $1.3205 from $1.3252 Dollar/yen: DOWN at 156.26 yen from 156.30 yen Euro/pound: DOWN at 87.54 pence from 87.56 pence Brent North Sea Crude: DOWN 0.1 percent at $62.84 per barrel West Texas Intermediate: UP 0.7 percent at $59.08 per barrel

UK fails to reach deal to access EU defence scheme
UK fails to reach deal to access EU defence scheme
LONDON, Nov 28, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - Britain said Friday it was "disappointing" talks with Brussels to access a 150-billion-euro ($174 billion) EU scheme to bolster Europe's defences had failed amid disagreement over the entry fee. European nations have scrambled to bolster their militaries since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, with Brussels launching its loan initiative earlier this year. The SAFE (Security Action for Europe) scheme will provide EU countries with 150 billion euros of loans at lower rates to help them rearm. London and Brussels had been wrangling over the level of contribution the UK would make to join the scheme, which would have allowed Britain to secure more lucrative access for its arms manufacturers. EU relations minister Nick Thomas-Symonds said in a statement it was "disappointing that we have not been able to conclude discussions on UK participation in the first round of SAFE". But he noted the UK defence industry "will still be able to participate in projects through SAFE on third-country terms". "Our position was always clear: we will only sign agreements that are in the national interest and provide value for money," Thomas-Symonds added. EU countries are obliged to spend the loaned money on weapons that are at least 65 percent produced in the bloc. If Britain had joined, that figure would have been reduced for London -- meaning British firms could try to cash in more. Both sides said the negotiations had been conducted in "good faith", with the European Commission also stressing that Britain can still participate in up to 35 percent of SAFE procurements. It added that talks with Canada about its participation continue "and we hope to find an agreement before Sunday". EU officials previously said the bloc had asked London to contribute up to 6.5 billion euros to join the SAFE scheme. But Britain -- which left the EU in 2020 following its Brexit split -- baulked at that price tag and had pushed for a better deal, according to diplomatic sources. Poland, Romania, France and Hungary were among the biggest claimants for money under SAFE, when Brussels unveiled its funding allocations in September. Poland snapped up loans worth almost 44 billion euros, followed by Romania on 16.7 billion, and France and Hungary on 16.2 billion each, according to preliminary figures.
