DHAKA, Aug 2, 2026 (BSS) - The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) has foiled an attempt to evade nearly Taka 60 lakh in government revenue by uncovering a large quantity of undeclared garments in an imported consignment at Dhaka Customs House.

Acting on a tip-off, a special team from the CIID headquarters intercepted the consignment imported by M/S S.B. Traders before its release and conducted a physical examination.

The consignment, imported under Bill of Entry No. C-765485 dated July 30, 2026, was subjected to inspection after customs clearance procedures were suspended based on intelligence information.

During the examination, CIID officials found that the importer had declared 2,699 pieces of garments, while the actual quantity was 4,319 pieces, revealing 1,620 additional items, or 60.02 percent more than declared, said an NBR press release.

The inspection also detected significant discrepancies in several categories of garments. Declared Lehenga Ordinary stood at 29 pieces against 48 pieces found, Lehenga Gorgeous 13 against 50, Premium Sharee 112 against 120, Super Sharee 112 against 803, Medium Sharee 179 against 900, Girls' Wear Set 128 
against 140, Sherwani 18 against 120 and T-shirts 94 against 124.

In addition, while 187 gowns were declared, inspectors found only 100 gowns along with 87 extra pieces of Lehenga Ordinary, indicating deliberate misdeclaration of the imported goods.

The CIID estimated that the attempt would have caused a revenue loss of Taka 31.71 lakh in customs duties and taxes. Including an equivalent redemption fine, the total recoverable amount stands at nearly Taka 60 lakh.

A detailed report has been sent to the Dhaka Customs House for taking legal 
action.

The CIID said it would continue intelligence surveillance and special drives against undeclared imports, false declarations and customs duty evasion to safeguard government revenue and ensure transparency in import-export trade.
