RAJSHAHI, June 2, 2026 (BSS) - Trading has yet to pick up fully at Baneshwar Haat, Rajshahi's largest wholesale mango market.
The supply of mangoes is increasing with each haat day. The market has become especially busy since Tuesday, when the harvesting of Himsagar, also known as Khirsapat, mangoes began. However, compared to the supply, the number of buyers and wholesalers remains low.
A visit to the Baneshwar mango market showed mangoes arriving from different areas on small trucks, pickup vans and other vehicles.
The mango haat is held at the vegetable market beside the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway. The supply is so large that queues of mango-laden vehicles stretch onto the highway.
Sellers are calling out prices from their vehicles, but many complain they are not getting the prices they expected.
According to the district administration's 'Mango Calendar', marketing of Himsagar mangoes began on Saturday. Depending on size and quality, Himsagar is selling for Taka 1,400 to 1,800 per maund.
The early-season Gopalbhog variety is selling for Taka 1,400 to 1,600 per maund. In addition, Guti mangoes are being sold for Taka 500 to 700 and Lakshmanbhog for Taka 700 to 900 per maund.
Orchard owner Jalal Uddin from Baneshwar came to the haat with a van loaded with Gopalbhog and Himsagar mangoes.
He was bargaining with a trader, asking Taka 1,800 per maund for his Himsagar. Jalal Uddin said, "On Monday, I sold Gopalbhog at Taka 1,750 per maund. On Tuesday, buyers were offering only Taka 1,200 to 1,300 for the same variety. Because of Eid, many wholesalers could not come to the market, causing prices to fall."
Trader Osman Mia, who came to buy mangoes, said tree-ripened Himsagar mangoes have started arriving in the market.
“Large mangoes are fetching relatively good prices, while smaller ones are selling at lower rates. There are plenty of mangoes in the market, but few buyers. The situation may improve in a few days,” he said.
He added that many wholesalers have not yet returned after the Eid holiday, resulting in lower demand compared to supply.
The three major mango-producing districts in Rajshahi division are Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj and Naogaon.
Among them, Baneshwar mango haat is considered one of the largest wholesale mango markets in the northern region.
Wholesalers from different parts of the country trade here every day. However, the market has yet to regain its usual momentum after Eid.
According to Rajshahi's Mango Calendar, marketing of Guti mangoes began on May 15, Gopalbhog on May 22, Ranipasand and Lakshmanbhog on May 25, and Himsagar on May 30. Langra and Banana mangoes are scheduled to arrive from June 10, while Amrapali and Fazli will enter the market from June 15.
