CHAPAINAWABGANJ, May 31, 2026 (BSS) - Two cousin brothers drowned while bathing in Pagla River in Bahalabari Ghat area of Shibganj Upazila in the district this afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Safi, 14, son of Jalal Uddin, and Zubayer, 14, son of Kamal Uddin, both from Noyalabhanga union of the upazila.

Both were eighth-grade students. Safi studied at Ranhati High School, while Zubayer was a student at a secondary school in Dinajpur.

Police sources said four cousin brothers went to Pagla river with an uncle to take a bath in the afternoon. Safi and Zubayer entered the river before the others. At one point, they sank beneath the water.

As soon as the situation was noticed, local residents launched a rescue effort. Although the two teenagers were eventually recovered from the river with the help of locals, they had already died.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Matiur Rahman of Shibganj Police Station confirmed the incident, saying that police rushed to the scene after receiving information and recovered the bodies before handing them over to their families.
