KHULNA, May 30, 2026 (BSS) – Freedom fighter Shahruzzaman Mortaza, a member of the BNP National Executive Committee, former senior vice-president of Khulna city BNP and former president of the Khulna Chamber of Commerce and Industry, was laid to the eternal rest with state honours today.
Mortaza died at his residence in Khulna after Fajr prayers on Saturday after suffering from various age-related illnesses for a prolonged period. He was survived by a son, a daughter and a host of relatives, well-wishers and admirers to mourn his death.
His body was taken to the Khulna city BNP office in the afternoon where leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies paid their last respects. The body was draped with the party flag.
His funeral prayers were held at Shaheed Hadis Park after Asr prayers. Before the janaza, he was accorded a state guard of honour.
Floral tributes were also paid on behalf of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
Among others, Khulna City Corporation Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju, Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Mia Golam Parwar, Khulna city BNP President Advocate S.M. Shafiqul Alam Mona, Khulna district BNP Convener Moniruzzaman Montu, Members of Parliament Ali Asgar Lobi, Amir Ejaz Khan and Advocate Jahangir Hossain Helal, freedom fighter Moniruzzaman Moni, Khulna city Jamaat Ameer Professor Mahfuzur Rahman and Khulna University Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Md Harunur Rashid Khan attended the funeral.
Leaders of various political, social and cultural organisations, academics, journalists and people from all walks of life also joined the janaza and paid homage to the veteran leader.
Speakers at the funeral recalled Mortaza's contributions to politics, society and business and prayed for the salvation of his departed soul.
He was later buried at Tutpara Graveyard.
Meanwhile, BNP leaders, including National Executive Committee Student Affairs Secretary and Chief Whip of Parliament Rakibul Islam Bakul, Information Affairs Secretary Azizul Bari Helal, Khulna city BNP President Advocate S.M. Shafiqul Alam Mona and General Secretary Shafiqul Alam Tuhin, expressed deep shock at his death.
In separate condolence messages, they remembered his contributions to political, social and business spheres and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family while praying for eternal peace of the departed soul.
