DHAKA, Aug 30, 2026(BSS) - Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr M Enamul Haque passed away at a hospital here at the early hours of today. 

He was 88.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, a daughter and numerous relatives, colleagues and admirers.

The namaz-e-janaza of the former IGP was held after Zuhr prayers at the SI Shiru Mia auditorium at Rajarbagh Police Lines. Additional Inspectors General of Police (Add’l IGPs), heads of various police units in Dhaka, police officers and members, as well as his former colleagues and family members, attended the janaza.

Following the janaza, Add’l IGP (Admin) A.K.M. Awlad Hossain placed floral wreaths on the coffin on behalf of IGP Md Ali Hossain Fakir.

Floral tributes were also paid to the deceased on behalf of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, the Bangladesh Police Service Association and the Retired Police Officers Welfare Association.

Dr M. Enamul Haque was accorded an official funeral.

Dr Haque served as the IGP from October 16, 1991 to July 8, 1992. During his distinguished career, he also served as Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Principal of the Bangladesh Police Academy, Sardah, besides holding several other important positions.

He earned a reputation for professionalism, integrity, dedication and efficiency throughout his career and contributed significantly to enhancing the reputation and dignity of the Bangladesh Police.

Born in 1938 into a respected Muslim family at Godagari upazila of Rajshahi district, Dr Haque was also known for his thirst for knowledge and academic achievements.

He obtained his bachelor's degree with honours and master's degree in History from the Rajshahi University in 1956. In 1968, he earned an LLB degree from the Dhaka University. In 1993, he received a PhD in Public Administration from the University of New Orleans in the United States. He also obtained diplomas and other degrees from several renowned educational institutions at home and abroad.

Dr Haque served as a member of the Bangladesh Law Commission and was associated with various national and international institutions. He also worked with several United Nations agencies. From 1988 to 1992, he served as Bangladesh's only elected member of Interpol.

Dr Haque was also a prolific writer. He authored around 14 published books and regularly contributed columns to several renowned national and international newspapers and journals.

He will be laid to rest at his family cemetery in Godagari, Rajshahi.

IGP Condolence

IGP Md Ali Hossain Fakir expressed his profound grief and sorrow at the death of Dr M. Enamul Haque. He prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed his deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.

Police Service Association’s condolence 

The Bangladesh Police Service Association (BPSA) also expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Dr M. Enamul Haque.

In a condolence message signed by Superintendent of Police (SP) Dhaka and BPSA General Secretary Shamima Parvin, the association prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and conveyed sympathy to the members of the bereaved family.
