Any attempt to disrupt security in JS elections will be sternly suppressed: Jahangir

RANGPUR, Feb 8, 2026 (BSS) - Adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Agriculture Lieutenant General Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) has directed all concerned to sternly suppress any attempt to disrupt public security in the upcoming 13th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) elections. 

“There will be no compromise on the issue of law and order in the JS elections. The highest professionalism of the law enforcers and officials must be displayed to ensure the safety of the citizens before, on and after the elections,” he said.

He said this while addressing the ‘Law and order meeting for smooth conduct of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad Election and Referendum, 2026’ held at the conference room of the  Divisional Commissioner’s Office in the city as the chief guest on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Gani presided over the meeting.

Director General of RAB (SIF) AKM Shahidur Rahman, Additional IGP of Bangladesh Police Khandaker Rafiqul Islam and Additional Director General of BGB Brigadier General Md Sohrab Hossain Bhuiyan delivered speeches as special guests. 

Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Md Shahidul Islam delivered the welcome speech at the views-exchange meeting.
 
Among others, Rangpur Range DIG Aminul Islam and Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Majid Ali BPM were present at the event.
 
Addressing the election officials and members of the law enforcement agencies, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that their honesty, efficiency and professionalism will be the main strength of holding this election peacefully in a festive atmosphere. 
 
“If the ballot box is snatched or there is any irregularity at the polling station, no one, including the concerned returning or assistant returning officer and presiding officer, will be exempted,” he said.

The adviser said that the circular issued by the Home Ministry has mentioned that in this election, law enforcement agencies will be able to enter the premises of the polling station if necessary. 
 
He said that miscreants who can create obstacles in the election must be arrested quickly and legal action must be taken against them.
 
Intensive patrolling must be conducted four days before the election to create a fair and impartial electoral environment. 
 
“Patrolling activities in char areas and remote areas must be conducted intensively in coordination with various forces,” he said. 
 
In his closing speech, the Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs said that this time, in addition to the traditional issues, the training and technology of law enforcement agencies will be used to the maximum extent. 

“'Election Security App', body worn cameras, CCTV, drones and other technologies are being used. Moreover, this time the largest number of law enforcement officers (about 10 lakh) has been deployed,” he said. 

Regarding the security of the polling centers, the Senior Secretary said that this time the Presiding Officers will be able to perform their duties with courage. 

At least five to six armed law enforcement officers will be on duty at each center, including an armed Ansar. In addition, there will be a striking force and patrol team. 

“I hope that with the joint efforts of everyone, the best election in the history of Bangladesh will be presented,” he said.

All eight Deputy Commissioners, eight Superintendents of Police, Upazila Nirbahi Officers, Regional, District, Upazila Election Officers, representatives of the Armed Forces Division and BGB and Ansar-VDP, all Deputy Police Commissioners and Officers-in-Charge of Thanas from all over Rangpur division participated in the event. 
 
While briefing local journalists after the meeting, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that the 13th JS elections will be very much credible and will be held in a very peaceful, fair and festive atmosphere. There is no fear of any vote rigging in the election. 

“If there is any vote rigging anywhere, we will take action immediately to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election in a joyful and festive atmosphere,” he said. 

In response to a question about whether a fair election is possible in the current law and order situation, the adviser said, "We have taken such preparations as may be necessary. This issue was discussed in today's meeting too, in Rangpur,” he added.
