DHAKA, Sept 10, 2026 (BSS) – Officials of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) detained seven passengers and seized 38.50 litres of foreign liquor from their baggage at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) here.

The estimated market value of the seized liquor is Tk 7.70 lakh.

Acting on a tip-off received on September 8, officials of the Airport Circle, C-Shift of CIID learned that passengers arriving from Mumbai on an Air India flight might be carrying foreign liquor in their baggage.

Following the information, customs intelligence officials strengthened surveillance at the airport.

Air India flight AI2183 from Mumbai landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 10:43am. After completing immigration and collecting their baggage, the passengers proceeded through the green channel, where customs intelligence officials conducted searches on passengers they considered suspicious, said an NBR press release.

During the searches, officials recovered 10 litres of foreign liquor from the baggage of Azmul Hoque, 7 litres from Mojammel Haque Bhuiyan, 6 litres from Md Imran, 6 litres from Babul Miah, 3.50 litres from Md Nafij Sabat, 3.50 litres from Al Amin Sheikh and 3 litres from Saddam Hossain.
Thus, customs officials seized a total of 38.50 litres of foreign liquor from the seven passengers, valued at approximately Tk 7,70,000.
The CIID is taking further legal action in accordance with the existing customs laws and regulations.

Officials are also examining whether the incident involved an organised network and identifying those who may have been behind the attempted smuggling.
