World Suicide Prevention Day being observed nationwide

DHAKA, Sept 10, 2026 (BSS) – The World Suicide Prevention Day is being observed across the country as elsewhere in the world today with a call to challenge prevailing perceptions about suicide, break the silence and stigma surrounding the issue, and encourage open conversations about mental health.

This year’s theme of World Suicide Prevention Day 2026 is- “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”, accompanied by the call to “Start the Conversation by Breaking the Silence and Stigma around Suicide.”

The World Suicide Prevention Day is an awareness day always observed on 10 September every year, in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides, with various activities around the world since 2003.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 727,000 people die by suicide globally every year, although suicide is preventable.

It is the third leading cause of death among people aged 15–29 worldwide, with nearly 73 percent of suicide deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries.
