DHAKA, Dec 11, 2025 (BSS) - Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdelouahab Saidani today called for strengthened cooperation between Algeria and Bangladesh in trade, education, technology and renewable energy, paying tribute to the enduring friendship between the two nations as he spoke at a commemorative ceremony in Dhaka.
He made the remarks while the Algerian embassy in Dhaka hosted an event to observe the "Demonstrations of December 11, 1960," honouring Algerians who sacrificed their lives during the anti-colonial uprising against French rule.
The ceremony began with the hoisting of the Algerian national flag, followed by a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs.
In his remarks, Ambassador Saidani reflected on the historical significance of the 1960 protests, recalling how Algerians rose up during the visit of French President Charles de Gaulle, rejecting partial sovereignty and demanding full independence.
He noted that the brutal repression only strengthened national unity and drew global attention to the Algerian cause.
He said the resistance eventually led to Algeria's recognised right to self-determination at the United Nations, paving the way for independence. Algeria, he added, now stands committed to progress through innovation, youth empowerment and a diversified economy.
Drawing parallels between the struggles of Algeria and Bangladesh, the ambassador emphasised shared histories of sacrifice, dignity and self-determination.
Quoting him, "Algeria understands the value of freedom because its people paid its price... Both our histories are marked by resistance against oppression, the pursuit of dignity, and the belief that nations must define their own destiny."
He added that Algeria seeks enhanced collaboration with Bangladesh in trade, education, technology, renewable energy, cultural exchange and peace diplomacy.
The programme concluded with a documentary film on the December 11, 1960 demonstrations. Distinguished members of civil society, Bangladesh Scouts, business leaders and journalists attended the event.
