CARACAS, May 29, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - The Venezuelan government on Wednesday would not rule out the possible arrest of opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, in hiding since last July's elections that she says were stolen.

At a press conference with pro-government media, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello linked Machado to alleged "terrorist acts" with the aim of overthrowing President Nicolas Maduro.

"Everything in good time," Cabello said in response to a question about an arrest warrant for Machado.

"Let us not despair, there are open investigations and everything happens in its time," he added.

The government of Maduro, whose re-election to a third term is not recognized by many countries, regularly alleges the existence of US-backed plots against him.

The government won an overwhelming majority of parliamentary seats and 23 of 24 governorships in elections Sunday boycotted by the opposition, which insists its candidate won last year's presidential poll.

Machado, in an interview with AFP this month, vowed to continue her struggle against Maduro's rule "to the end."
