DHAKA, Feb 6, 2026 (BSS) - BNP has pledged to ensure press freedom and professional security for journalists in its election manifesto, alongside forming a retirement welfare board for media professionals.

The assurances were announced during the unveiling of the BNP's election manifesto at a programme held at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the capital this afternoon.

BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman read out the manifesto.

According to the manifesto, the BNP has outlined major reform initiatives aimed at guaranteeing freedom of the mass media and ensuring the economic protection of media workers.

A "National Journalist Retirement Welfare Board" will be formed to address journalists' old-age security and financial well-being.

The party also committed to ensuring trials in cases of journalist killings and torture, as well as withdrawing politically motivated false cases filed against journalists.

In addition, the manifesto pledged to re-examine the controversial Digital Security Act (DSA), which was replaced by the Cyber Security Act (CSA) in September 2023. The law has faced widespread criticism for curbing freedom of expression and targeting journalists. BNP said it would form a special cell to ensure the professional protection of journalists.

The party further promised to pursue a balanced and non-discriminatory policy in the distribution of government newspaper advertisements by ending existing political bias.

The manifesto also proposed establishing a strong media regulatory structure to prevent rumours, fake news and hate speech, while ensuring accountability and safeguarding freedom of expression. It added that if citizens raise complaints against the media, a legal mechanism would be in place to resolve such allegations within 30 days.

BNP reaffirmed its determination to strictly suppress any form of attack or aggression against journalists and media offices, ensuring their security. The party also emphasized that protecting impartial critics is a responsibility of the state, aimed at fostering unbiased and responsible journalism.
