KHULNA, Sept 3, 2026 (BSS) - Khulna Development Authority (KDA) Chairman and Khulna city BNP President Advocate Shafiqul Alam Mona today said the fisheries sector plays a vital role in meeting the protein and nutritional needs of people, creating employment, revitalising the rural economy and earning foreign currency through exports.

“With proper planning and the use of modern technology, the production capacity of the fisheries sector can be increased manifold,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at a fish fry release programme organised by Khulna city BNP at the pond of Government Brajalal (BL) College in the city this morning.

The programme was organised as part of the central programme marking the 48th founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Mona said BNP Chairman and Prime Minister of Bangladesh Tarique Rahman has placed special emphasis on turning the country's youth into entrepreneurs instead of leaving them unemployed.

“If young people come forward to fish farming using modern and scientific methods, unemployment can be reduced rapidly while meeting local nutritional needs and earning substantial foreign currency,” he said.

 Meanwhile, speaking during fish fry release at Daulatpur Day-Night College and Hans Pond, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Director and Khulna city BNP General Secretary Shafiqul Alam Tuhin said the southwestern region, particularly Khulna, is rich in natural and fisheries resources.

He said the region’s natural fisheries resources had faced serious threats due to corruption, mismanagement, illegal occupation of canals and water bodies, and filling up of wetlands during the previous government.

Principal of Government BL College Professor Saiful Islam attended the programme on behalf of the academic community and welcomed the BNP's welfare-oriented initiative.
A large number of leaders and activists of Khulna city BNP, its thanas and affiliated organisations were present at the programme.

The leaders jointly released fry of different fish species, including rohu, catla and mrigel, at the BL College pond, Day-Night College and Hans Pond.

They also prayed for the good health and long life of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on the occasion of his Prison Release Day.
