BAGERHAT, August 30, 2026 (BSS) – People from different walks of life formed a human chain demanding construction of sustainable embankments quickly to prevent river erosion and compensation for those affected by river erosion in an area of about four kilometers from Romjaipur to Urabunia in Perikhali union of Rampal upazila of Bagerhat. 

The human chain was organized on the banks of the Ghashiakhali river canal in Purbapara, Romjaipur at the initiative of the residents of Romjaipur. 

More than three hundred men and women affected by river erosion participated in it carrying  placards with various inscriptions such as 'I want sustainable embankment now', 'I am getting ferry in exchange for my life, we want sustainable embankment', 'Sell me, but give me embankment'. 

They also said the government should provide appropriate compensation to those who have lost their homes, land and assets due to river erosion. 

Bayezid Sheikh, UP member of Ward No. 5 of Perikhali Union, said the area has been under the grip of river erosion for years. Many families have lost their homes and agricultural land, he said, adding that if a sustainable embankment is not built quickly, there is a risk that the entire village will disappear into the river.
