RAJSHAHI, Aug 27, 2026 (BSS)- Farmers and potato traders in Rajshahi have demanded the swift implementation of the decision of the District Recommendation Committee to fix the rent for storing potatoes in cold storage facilities.
They demanded that the recommendation to fix the maximum storage rent at Taka 5 per kg of potato, after deducting 5 kg from the net weight of each sack, be implemented.
The demand was made at a human chain organised today beside the Naogaon-Rajshahi highway, in front of the office of the District Potato and Raw Materials Traders Cooperative Society at Takipur under Paba Upazila of the district.
At the human chain, District Potato and Raw Materials Traders Cooperative Society President Ahad Ali Shah, Vice-President Mizanur Rahman Milon, General Secretary Iftekharul Islam Dony and organisation member Mithu Haji spoke. Other leaders of the organisation and potato farmers were also present.
The speakers said potato is not merely an agricultural product; the livelihoods of thousands of farmers and traders in the northern region depend on it.
Therefore, they said, the cold storage rent should be fixed in a way that allows farmers to at least recover their production costs while enabling traders to store and market the produce fairly.
