DHAKA, Aug 27, 2026 (BSS) - The government has assigned ministers, state ministers and whips of the Parliament the responsibility of overseeing law and order, corruption and drug control, good governance, transparency and accountability, as well as government development and public welfare activities across 64 districts.

A notification to this effect was published in an extraordinary issue of the Bangladesh Gazette today.

The notification assigns these responsibilities and states that it will take effect immediately.

During the previous government's tenure, although development allocations existed on paper for various districts, there were allegations of massive corruption and looting of funds, it added.

It further said that a portion of the looted money was laundered abroad, while the remaining portion was used domestically for activities that contribute to social decay and threaten public safety and state security.

The release also lists the names of ministers, state ministers, and whips assigned responsibility for the 64 districts.

Among them, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud has been assigned to Rajshahi and Natore; Dr AZM Zahid Hossain to Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, and Panchagarh; Abdul Awal Mintoo to Lakshmipur; and Nitai Roy Chowdhury to Chuadanga.

Khandakar Abdul Muktadir has been assigned to Habiganj; Ariful Haque Choudhury to Moulvibazar; Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee to Chattogram; and M Rashiduzzaman Millat to Sherpur, Mymensingh, and Netrokona.

Asadul Habib Dulu has been assigned to Thakurgaon and Dinajpur; and Md Asaduzzaman to Khulna, Satkhira, and Bagerhat districts.

Zakaria Taher has been assigned to Feni and Noakhali; Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain to Manikganj and Munshiganj; Saching Prue to Cox's Bazar; and Md Shariful Alam to Tangail and Narsingdi.

Shama Obaed Islam has been assigned to Madaripur and Shariatpur; Aninda Islam Amit to Meherpur, Kushtia and Jhenaidah; Abdul Bari to Bogura and Chapainawabganj; and Sultan Salauddin Tuku to Dhaka.

Mir Mohammed Helal Uddin has been assigned to Khagrachhari, Bandarban, and Rangamati; Habibur Rashid to Gazipur and Narayanganj; Md Rajib Ahsan to Barguna, Patuakhali, and Pirojpur; and Mir Shahe Alam to Rangpur, Gaibandha, and Kurigram.

Farzana Sharmin has been assigned to Sirajganj and Pabna; Shaikh Faridul Islam to Jashore, Magura, and Narail; Yasser Khan Choudhury to Jamalpur and Kishoreganj; Ahmed Sohel Manzur to Barishal, Bhola and Jhalakathi; and Mohammad Shamim Kaiser to Joypurhat and Naogaon.

Alhaj Md G K Gaus has been assigned to Sylhet and Sunamganj; Mia Nuruddin Ahmed to Rajbari, Faridpur and Gopalganj; and A B M Ashraf Uddin (Nizan) to Brahmanbaria, Cumilla, and Chandpur districts.

According to the release, the assigned ministers, state ministers, and whips will provide necessary advice to government offices on maintaining law and order in their respective districts. In particular, they will offer advice and oversight regarding the control of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, prevention of smuggling, and suppression of serious crimes.

At the same time, they will be responsible for overseeing and advising on the implementation of the government's electoral manifesto, poverty alleviation, employment generation, social security programs, and other development and public welfare activities.

When necessary, the assigned ministers, state ministers, and whips may participate in various district-level meetings in their respective districts and provide advice.

The notification has been issued based on Chapter V, Rule 33; Chapter I, Rule 4(ii); Chapter II, Rules 16(ix)(e) and 16(xii) of the Rules of Business, as well as the judgment of the High Court Division in Writ Petition No. 3512/2003.

The release said that under Article 5(2) of the Constitution, the executive authority is exercised under the authority of the Prime Minister. This system of responsibility assignment has been introduced with the aim of establishing transparency and accountability in the government's development activities and preventing corruption.
