MYMENSINGH, June 3, 2026 (BSS) – Mymensingh police overnight arrested four suspects including the son of an opposition Jamaat-e-Islami leader as a manhunt was underway over the murder of BNP activist Rana Mia during a clash between two feuding groups.
Additional police superintendent Md Abdullah Al Mamun told BSS the four suspects were arrested while investigations were underway to ascertain the murder motive.
But he confirmed that Mia was killed during a clash between two rival groups on Monday at Char Ishwardia area within the purview of Mymensingh City Corporation.
Witnesses earlier said the clash erupted on Monday afternoon following an altercation between the two groups when Mia was stabbed as he was trying to protect his brother.
He was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police identified the suspects in custody as Mahmudul Islam Mahin (20) who is the son of Jamaat’s working committee member Mofidul Islam more known as Mofidul Master, Tofazzal Hossain (40), Humayun Kabir Akash (23 and Monirul Islam (24).
They are residents of the neighbourhood.
The victim’s elder brother M Mofazzal Hossain earlier filed a murder case with Kotwali Model Thana naming 10 individuals and another 10 to 12 unidentified suspects.
His family members said they were supporters of BNP and campaigned for the party candidate during the last elections when their feud developed with Jamaat leader Mofidul Master and his associates.
BNP lawmaker elected from the constituency Abu Wahab Akand Wahid earlier said Mia was an active BNP worker and alleged that activists of a “clandestine organisation” were responsible for his killing.
