Five killed in separate road accidents in Cumilla

CUMILLA, April 1, 2026 (BSS) - At least five people were killed and four others injured in three separate road accidents on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway early Wednesday.

In the first accident, two auto-rickshaw drivers were killed when an unidentified speeding vehicle struck their CNG-powered vehicle in the early hours of today in kanara area under Daudkandi upazila of the district. 

The deceased were identified as Barek, 42, son of late Latu Mia of Sarkarpur village of the upazila and Md. Mostafa, 40, son of Nur Islam, aresident of the same area.

Four passengers—Nabir Hossain, 38, Kawsar, 40, Ismail, 37, and Sagar Mia, 35,—were injured in the same accident and admitted to different hospitals in Cumilla.

Police said the victims were returning home from a fair in Matlab’s Beltoli area when the accident occurred. The auto-rickshaw was attempting to cross the highway when it was hit by a speeding car, killing two people on the spot and four others injured.

Earlier, around 3:45 am, two people were killed in another accident near Nimsar Bazar under Burichang upazila of the district. 

The deceased were identified as Mohammad Jahirul Islam Main, 27, a resident of Lalpur village in Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila and Md. Sohel Rana, 35, from Keshabpur village in Meherpur Sadar upazila.

In another accident, ninth-grade student Ibne Taim was killed after being run over by a lorry while crossing the road at Kather Pul in Chandina upazila of the district around 9.30 am.

Locals said the student was returning home after coaching when a Chattogram-bound truck hit him at a U-turn. He died on the spot.

Daudkandi Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Iqbal Bahar Majumder and Mainamati Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Momin separately said that legal action is under process regarding the accidents. The injured are being treated and the bodies of the deceased have been handed over to their relatives.
