BARISHAL, Aug 5, 2026 (BSS) - Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today reaffirmed the government's commitment to institutionalising the democracy achieved through the July Mass Uprising. 

"We are determined to institutionalise the democracy achieved through their sacrifices. The best way to uphold the dignity of the martyrs' blood is to establish a democratic, inclusive and just society," he said.

Speaking to reporters after paying tribute at the July Martyrs' Memorial at Amtala intersection in Barishal on the occasion of July Mass Uprising Day, the minister said the overthrow of fascism was made possible through the sacrifices of students and people from all walks of life.

"It is the nation's responsibility to honour the sacrifices of the martyrs by building a democratic, non-discriminatory and just Bangladesh," he said.

Earlier, Swapon laid wreaths at the memorial, followed by representatives of the Barisal City Corporation, the divisional and district administrations, police, freedom fighters, July warriors and leaders of various political, social and cultural organisations.

As part of the day's observance, a discussion meeting and a reception for the families of the July martyrs and injured July warriors were organised at the Barishal District Shilpakala Academy.

Various social and cultural programmes were also held across the district to commemorate the day and pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during the July Mass Uprising.
