CUMILLA, Sep 03, 2026 (BSS) - An initiative has been taken in Cumilla to preserve the memory of Language Movement pioneer and renowned politician martyr Dhirendranath Datta and highlight his contributions to the new generation.

The initiative includes establishing a library in his name, setting up 'book corners' at educational institutions, observing his birth anniversary, publishing a commemorative souvenir and renovating his residence at Jhautala.

A meeting on forming the 'Martyr Dhirendranath Datta Memory Preservation and Library Implementation Council' and outlining its programmes was held at Deshapriya Conference Hall in Kandirpar area of the city on Tuesday night.

Council Convener Dr Shah Md Selim chaired the meeting, which began with the national anthem, followed by a one-minute silence in memory of martyrs of the Liberation War and democratic movements.

Speakers highlighted Datta's contributions to politics, society and the Language Movement and stressed the need for research and long-term initiatives to make his legacy known to younger generations.

The meeting decided to observe his birth anniversary on November 2 with due dignity, publish a commemorative souvenir, organise a book exhibition and invite his daughter Manisha Datta, who lives in India.

It also decided to establish 'book corners' in libraries of Cumilla University, colleges and schools and highlight Datta's role in the Language Movement among students. 

Discussions will also be held on incorporating his contributions into textbooks.

The meeting urged the government to renovate and preserve Datta's abandoned residence at Jhautala and proposed establishing a research centre on language and the Language Movement.

Several sub-committees were formed to implement the council's programmes.

While chairing the event, Dr Shah Md Selim said preserving the memory of Datta is not only Cumilla's responsibility but also a national responsibility.
